Our Story
It all began with a phone call. Arkia Wade, a resident of Turner Station, received a request from a senior woman in her community—a simple ask for a ride to a doctor's appointment. Without hesitation, Arkia agreed. Little did she know, this act of kindness would spark a life-changing realization. After dropping the senior off at her cardiologist's office, Arkia witnessed firsthand the profound gratitude in the woman's eyes. She learned that the appointment had been postponed multiple times because the woman couldn't find a way to get there on her own. This interaction left Arkia with mixed emotions—joy from helping someone in need, but also concern for how many others were facing similar challenges, isolated and unable to access essential services.
Inspired by this experience, Arkia Wade founded Neighborhood Companions, Inc. (NCI). Her vision was simple yet powerful: to provide not just transportation, but genuine companionship to seniors in Baltimore County. Many older adults, especially African Americans, face elevated rates of isolation, loneliness, and health issues due to limited mobility. Neighborhood Companions is more than just a ride service—it is about building connections and preventing the detrimental effects of isolation. Simply sharing a meal, doing a puzzle, going for a walk, or offering a listening ear could make a world of difference to someone's day.To bring her vision to life, Arkia enlisted volunteers through a grassroots effort, spreading the word through community networks and online platforms. Flyers appeared in churches, senior centers, and college campuses, inviting compassionate individuals to join in creating a supportive community for seniors.
Today, Neighborhood Companions continues to thrive, guided by Arkia Wade's commitment to combating isolation and fostering a stronger, more caring community—one ride, one conversation, one connection at a time.
